Dolphins in bye week, ponder inconsistencies
DAVIE, Fla. — The Miami Dolphins have a 2-2 record heading into the bye week and are tied atop the AFC East with New England and Buffalo.
Predictably, they’re happy to have a share of the division lead, but not happy about having two losses. What makes the bye week more tolerable is last week’s 38-14 victory over Oakland.
“I think getting back to .500 was huge for us,” quarterback Ryan Tannehill said. “Obviously, we didn’t play well the two previous weeks I think as a team, not just offensively. To play well and to have some momentum, some confidence going into the bye week and this big stretch we have coming up. It was a big weekend for us.”
The good thing for the Dolphins as they prepare for their Oct. 12 game against Green Bay is they will definitely get one starter back — safety Reshad Jones (suspension) — and they could get as many as three other starters back — center Mike Pouncey (hip), right guard Shelley Smith (knee) and middle linebacker Koa Misi (ankle).
On the downside, running back Knowshon Moreno (elbow) told The Palm Beach Post that he could be sidelined another four weeks.
“I probably got like four more weeks,” Moreno told The Post. “About four more weeks and I’ll be good.”
It’s unclear whether Moreno was serious.
Regardless, things are on the upswing overall. The Dolphins are fifth in rushing (142.3 yards per game), which is remarkable considering Moreno has basically only played one game.
Tannehill has the best passer rating in the AFC East at 81.2 (New England’s Tom Brady is at 79.1).
And the defense, ranked seventh in the NFL, has kept the Dolphins competitive.
The problem, as coach Joe Philbin points out, is consistency.
Tannehill has been inconsistent. Special teams have been inconsistent. The wide receivers have been inconsistent. Tackling has been inconsistent.
The way the Dolphins have played would lead one to think they’re headed toward another 8-8 season.
If that happens, Philbin might not return for a fourth season.
But the Dolphins aren’t looking that far ahead. They’re focused on the bye week and the immediate future.
“We want them to get away, come back on, I think it’s October 6, fresh and ready to roll,” Philbin said. “There is a lot of football left to be played, and all the things we want to do are out there. It’s all going to be determined by how well we perform on the field. It’s a good spot to be in.”
All things considered, it is a surprise that the Dolphins are fifth in the NFL in rushing at 142.3 yards per game. They were 26th last season at 90 yards per game. Philbin credits the revamped offensive line.
“I think the best thing has been we haven’t had a lot of negative plays,” he said. “I think upfront, we’ve done a good job assignment wise. There hasn’t been a ton of penetration and guys in our backfield making minus-3, minus-4, those types of things. That’s probably the starting point. When we get our back a chance to get his shoulders square at the line of scrimmage, you have a chance to make positive yards.”
