The Miami Dolphins fired defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle and replaced him with defensive backs coach Lou Anarumo, the team announced on Thursday.

The firing of Coyle comes three days after Miami head coach Joe Philbin was fired. Dan Campbell was promoted from tight ends coach to interim coach earlier this week and made the decision to release Coyle.

Anarumo is in his fourth season with the Dolphins. He will be tasked with improving a defense that ranks 30th in total defense and last in rushing defense.

Miami made a splashy offseason move by signing defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh to a $114 million contract in the offseason and he has to make an impact. According to published reports, several Dolphins defensive players met with Coyle last week to question his schemes and use of personnel.

Also, Jeff Burris was promoted to assistant defensive backs coach, where he will work primarily with the cornerbacks. Assistant defensive backs coach Blue Adams works with the safeties.
