The Miami Dolphins extended coach Joe Philbin’s contract through 2016 on Monday.

“You don’t get the best from someone when operating with a gun to their head,” owner Stephen Ross said, explaining the additional year from the NFL owners meetings in Phoenix.

Philbin is 23-25 in three years in Miami, including consecutive 8-8 finishes, and Ross said “there has to be improvement” in 2015.

This offseason, the Dolphins have added star defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh and reworked their offense — replacing receivers Mike Wallace, Brian Hartline and Brandon Gibson and tight end Charles Clay with wide receiver Kenny Stills and tight end Jordan Cameron.
