Dolphins exercise fifth-year option on QB Tannehill
The Sports Xchange
The Miami Dolphins will pick up their fifth-year contract option on quarterback Ryan Tannehill, locking him up through the 2016 season.
Pro Football Talk first reported the move by the Dolphins on their 2012 first-round draft pick.
According to the report, Tannehill will be entitled to the same $16.1 million salary for the fifth year of his deal as Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck and Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III will receive. The compensation is guaranteed for injury until next March, at which time it will become fully guaranteed.
Tannehill threw for a career-high 4,045 yards with 27 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 2014.
Dolphins executive vice president of football operations Mike Tannenbaum said last week that no call had been made about Tannehill’s option for 2016.
“Look, Ryan is here, we’re excited he is here, we haven’t made any decisions yet,” Tannenbaum said. “We know when the deadline is and we’ll make those decisions when we get there. Obviously one of the other axioms you’d like to use this time of year is the tape sets the floor and the character sets the ceiling, and for all of the resources (owner Stephen Ross) gives us to put into a player, you want to make sure that player is taking all of those resources and Ryan is just a great example of that.”
