Dolphins don’t declare Tannehill as starter

Miami Dolphins coach Joe Philbin declined to commit to quarterback Ryan Tannehill as his starter for Sunday’s game in London.

During his press conference Monday, Philbin was non-committal about the former first-rounder for the Dolphins’ game against the Oakland Raiders at Wembley Stadium.

The Dolphins (1-2) are coming off a 34-15 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

“We’ll decide our game plan before we leave to play Oakland,” Philbin said Monday.

Tannehill, the No. 8 overall pick in the 2012 draft, has slumped this season. Despite a season-opening win over the New England Patriots, Tannehill is only completing 56.5 percent of his passes and his passer rating has declined each week to get him to 74.1 for the year.

Matt Moore is the Dolphins’ backup quarterback.

Asked if the two were competing this week for the starting job, Philbin replied: “We’ll utilize the players the best way we see fit.”

Philbin said repeatedly at his press conference that he will bring the best 46 players to London to play the Raiders.

Phiblin was asked if it hurts Tannehill by not saying for sure that he will start against the Raiders.

“That’s my answer I’m sticking to it,” Philbin said.

Offensive coordinator Bill Lazor was later asked, according to The Palm Beach Post, if there was any doubt Tannehill would be the team’s starting quarterback on Sunday.

“Do you have any doubt I’ll be the coordinator?” he said.

Lazor said “it’s a production business” and that Tannehill is still the starter, according to the newspaper.
