DAVIE, Fla. — The fallout from Sunday’s disheartening 29-10 loss at the Buffalo Bills continued to flow in Monday, as the bad news came in waves for the Miami Dolphins.

Miami lost to Buffalo for the fourth time in the past five meetings, and it was also the third consecutive time the Bills have defeated the Dolphins in Buffalo.

That was the palatable news.

Starting running back Knowshon Moreno (dislocated left elbow) is expected to miss at least four weeks. Backup running back Lamar Miller (right ankle) left the stadium in a walking boot and his status for this week’s game against Kansas City is unknown. Special teams was a disaster (allowed 102-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, had a punt blocked, lost a fumble on a muffed punt, had two punts shanked). The much-hyped defensive line only produced two quarterback pressure (no sacks). And the offensive line allowed four sacks.

“We have to do better,” coach Joe Philbin said.

Oh, and quarterback Ryan Tannehill was unimpressive completing 31 of 49 passes for 241 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He threw a number of errant passes, just as he did in the opener vs. New England, and again struggled to accurately throw the deep ball. In other words, he had a bad day.

“It’s easy to point to one player, but it was the team,” Philbin said. “The team lost in all phases.”

And Philbin has evidence to support his point.

“The film says that we’re not detailed enough in any one area,” he said. “In other words, there were pictures on the tape where the depth wasn’t quite the right depth. The angle at the top of the route coming out and separating at the top wasn’t quite right. There were times where the location of the ball wasn’t quite what it needs to be. There were times when the protection forced the quarterback off of some open receivers and into other options.

“So the answer is our passing game is not at the level it needs to be. Those are the facts, but it’s a unit issue. It’s not one player that is really causing all of the problems with the passing game.”

With all the negative stuff going on, the most troubling news is the running back situation. Moreno ran with purpose and authority. He provided a boost for the offense and made the offensive line look better. Without Moreno the Dolphins are in danger of becoming one dimensional and predictable, as they were last season when they gave up a franchise-record 58 sacks.

Granted, the offensive line is improved from last season. But it remains unclear whether the running backs (without Moreno and possibly Miller) and tight ends are more adept at pass protection.

The Dolphins did well in their season-opening victory against New England, but they were fairly awful in their loss at Buffalo. .

In light of that, Philbin said his message to the team this week will be simple.

“We’ve got to execute better,” he said. “Really, that’s going to be the message. We watched the film, there’s little things here and there that we just have to do better. That’s going to be the big thing.

“We’ve got to execute the fundamentals better. We’ve got to be more detailed in everything we do. When we have an opportunity to make plays, we have to make them.”

–The Dolphins signed running back Daniel Thomas because of their injury situation. Thomas spent the previous three season with Miami after being a second-round pick in 2011. He was cut in August, but now he has another chance.

“We think he can help us right now,” Philbin said. “We’re looking to win this game against the Kansas City Chiefs. We want to find the 53 best guys that give us a chance to do that. In our opinion, that’s where we are.”

REPORT CARD VS. BILLS

PASSING OFFENSE: C-minus – Buffalo had four sacks, three in the first half. Pass protection eventually got better, but QB Ryan Tannehill is still inaccurate and there were at least two dropped passes.

RUSHING OFFENSE: C – RB Knowshon Moreno left in the first quarter with an elbow injury and Lamar Miller left the game with a walking boot on his right foot. The Dolphins rushed for 80 yards on 21 carries vs. Buffalo. And things are about to get worse.

PASS DEFENSE: D – The big mystery is why the DL, perhaps the best in the division, had no sacks and just two quarterback pressures. The secondary wasn’t much better, allowing rookie WR Sammy Watkins eight receptions for 117 yards. Miami was fortunate Bills QB EJ Manuel was inaccurate.

RUSH DEFENSE: B – This was slightly encouraging. The Dolphins gave up a 47-yard run but Buffalo, which usually has success against Miami, rushed for 113 yards on 33 carries (3.4 ypc), which aren’t killer totals. The Dolphins kept RBs C.J. Spiller (69 yards) and Fred Jackson (24 yards) somewhat under control.

SPECIAL TEAMS: F – This was a total failure. One blocked punt. A lost fumble on a punt. They allowed a 102-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, and had two shanked punts. It was probably their worst special teams performance in years.

COACHING: C – Coach Joe Philbin chose not to go for points late in the first half when Miami trailed, 9-0, opting to run the ball. Overall, however, the game plan seemed OK. There wasn’t much coaches could do after Moreno was injured and the defensive line was ineffective. At least they shored up pass protection in the second half.
