Dolphins 37, Chargers 0
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — The Miami Dolphins won their third straight game and moved into a tie for second place in the AFC East, routing the San Diego Chargers 37-0 on Sunday at Sun Life Stadium.
It was the Dolphins’ biggest margin of victory since Sept. 3, 1993, when they beat the New York Jets 52-14. It was Miami’s first shutout since Dec. 10, 2006, when they beat the New England Patriots 21-0.
Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill outplayed Chargers counterpart Philip Rivers — and it wasn’t close.
Tannehill completed 24 of 34 passes for 288 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. Tannehill’s passer rating of 125.6 represents a career high.
Rivers, a five-time Pro Bowl selection, completed 12 of 23 passes for 138 yards. He was intercepted three times and was replaced in the third quarter with Miami leading 37-0.
The Dolphins (5-3) are tied with the Buffalo Bills, who were idle on Sunday.
San Diego (5-4) lost its third straight game and fell behind the Kansas City Chiefs to third place in the AFC West.
Miami was so dominant that it did not punt until 2:53 remained in the third quarter, by which time the Dolphins led 30-0.
Perhaps the only concern for the Dolphins on Sunday was the injury to starting running back Lamar Miller, who left the game in the third quarter due to an injured shoulder.
The Chargers got off to a good start, mounting a 14-play drive to open the game. But the possession ended in a failed fourth-and-1 run by running back Branden Oliver, who was knocked for a loss by safety Reshad Jones.
The Dolphins took over at their own 23 and drove 77 yards in 10 plays, capped by a 6-yard touchdown pass from Tannehill to tight end Charles Clay. Tannehill lofted the ball just over the reach of safety Marcus Gilchrist to Clay, who beat the coverage of linebacker Donald Butler.
Miami went up 14-0 after Miller’s 2-yard touchdown run over left guard capped an eight-play, 61-yard drive.
Jones came up with a fairly easy interception when Rivers overthrew his receiver in the middle of the field. Jones returned the pick to the Chargers’ 31, setting up Caleb Sturgis for a 26-yard field goal. Sturgis then added a 25-yard field goal to give Miami a 20-0 halftime lead.
Two more Tannehill TD passes — a 21-yarder to wide receiver Rishard Matthews and a 14-yarder to wide receiver Jarvis Landry — and a 23-yard Sturgis field goal put the Dolphins up 37-0 after three quarters.
