According to the Lions’ depth chart, Levy and Ashlee Palmer — last year’s third starting linebacker — are set to start on the outside, with Whitehead in the middle. Whitehead is quick and athletic, but he has never played a college nor NFL regular-season game at middle linebacker, a demanding position that has radio contact with coaches and is responsible for setting the defense on each play.

After Tulloch suffered a season-ending knee injury while celebrating a sack against the Green Bay Packers, Levy took over play-calling duties, but Whitehead played more of the middle linebacker position.
