Cowboys sense ‘a great opportunity’
IRVING, Texas — This will not be a satisfied and content Dallas Cowboys team heading to Green Bay on Sunday.
Never mind that they have already surpassed expectations for the 2014 season with a 12-4 record, NFC East title and playoff victory.
The Cowboys have their sights on something more, something Super.
Sure, they are happy with their first playoff win since 2009, their second since 1996.
But the Cowboys are one win away from the NFC title game and two wins away from reaching the Super Bowl for the first time since 1995.
“I know what the consequences are,” owner Jerry Jones said. “It’s all out there for us on Sunday. There’s no looking at, ‘Well, we done great. We’ll build from this.’ That has nothing to do with it. We’ll miss a great opportunity if we go up there and don’t get this game won.”
The Cowboys will head to Green Bay as a confident team riding a five-game winning streak and playing its best football of the season.
This will be the first playoff game matching a team that was undefeated at home in the regular season against a team that was undefeated on the road.
“I think obviously it’s going to be a tough game,” quarterback Tony Romo said. “They’re outstanding. Green Bay is as good as we’ve gone against offensively, and they’re playing really good defensive football, too. It’s going to be a great challenge. I do know that this is the kind of game you want to be playing in, though, and … I’m very confident (we have) a good chance to go up there and play a good game.”
Certainly it will be a challenge defending Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who threw 25 touchdown passes and no interceptions, with a quarterback rating of 133.2, at Lambeau Field in 2014.
The Cowboys have forced 15 turnovers in the last five games and have recorded 12 sacks in the last four.
“We are confident,” defensive end Jeremy Mincey said. “We are as confident as they come. I feel good about the way we are playing. We are not thinking about regular season. We are 1-0 in the playoffs. The hungry dog wins. The hungry dog eats. We have to stay hungry. We haven’t done nothing yet.”
SERIES HISTORY: Dallas leads 16-15, including 4-2 in the playoffs. Green Bay has won the last three meetings in the regular season. Dallas has won the last four meetings in the postseason.
