Cowboys, RB McFadden agree to deal
One day after DeMarco Murray was introduced by the Philadelphia Eagles, the Dallas Cowboys agreed to a two-year deal with Darren McFadden.
The incentive-laden contract is expected to be official later Friday.
McFadden spent his first seven seasons with the Oakland Raiders but had only 1,249 total touches because of durability issues. He is a downhill, one-cut runner with good size and speed, similar to Murray.
While the argument that McFadden never had a great offensive line holds water, the bigger factor in Oakland might have been injuries. He had 155 carries for 534 yards and 36 receptions for 212 yards in 2014. He played in all 16 games for the first time in his career but had as many as 15 carries just once and only one run longer than 17 yards.
Murray signed a five-year, $42 million deal with $21 million guaranteed on Thursday. He led the NFL in rushing with 1,854 yards and had 511 total touches including two playoff games in 2014, the first season he was able to start all 16 games. The Cowboys were tight against the salary cap and reportedly set a per-year value of $6 million for Murray. He’ll receive more than $8 million per season from the NFC East-rival Eagles.
Dallas is likely to address the position in the draft. If not in the first round, where NFLDraftScout.com projects Georgia’s Todd Gurley and Wisconsin’s Melvin Gordon to be selected, then somewhere in the first three rounds with up to 10 backs graded as third-round selections or better.
The Cowboys drafted McFadden’s speedster teammate and Arkansas backfield sidekick Felix Jones in the first round of the 2008 draft, but Jones never established himself as more than a big-play backup. Owner Jerry Jones is an Arkansas alum and booster. He played offensive line for the Razorbacks and is very familiar with McFadden.
