Cowboys’ Murray focused on gaining W’s, not yards

IRVING, Texas — Dallas Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray leads the NFL in rushing with 385 yards and is on pace for a team-record 2,053, but he says the stats are not where it is at.

As the Cowboys prepare to face the New Orleans Saints on Sunday night, Murray is on pace to become the first Cowboys runner to win the rushing title since Emmitt Smith did it in 1995 but insists that counting W’s is more appropriate than counting yards.

“That’s something I don’t really pay attention to and I don’t think it’s really important as far as winning and losing,” Murray said of the rushing title. “I think we’re playing well together as a team and running the ball well and passing it well. But that’s far from my mind.”

Wide receiver Dez Bryant expects double teams from the Saints and defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. The Saints double-teamed Bryant last year and held him to one catch for 44 yards, so he expects the same Sunday even if it means fewer defenders to stop Murray’s running.

“I just think, you know, he’s going to stick to his game plan,” Bryant said. “If they want to keep doubling, DeMarco will run for 150 or 200 more.”

Defensive tackle Henry Melton missed practice for a second straight day Thursday and remains a long shot to play against the Saints because of a hamstring injury.

Defensive tackle Terrell McClain (concussion) hopes to practice Friday for a chance to play on Sunday. He passed a concussion test on Wednesday and must pass another before being cleared to practice and possibly play against the Saints.

Linebacker Rolando McClain has yet to practice since suffering a groin injury against the Tennessee Titans two weeks ago and is expected to miss his second straight game.
