Cowboys CB Scandrick to join workouts Monday
The Sports Xchange
Dallas Cowboys cornerback Orlando Scandrick, seeking a new contract, plans to show up to the team’s offseason workouts Monday.
Scandrick has been staying home from voluntary workouts because he wasn’t satisfied with his contract, but Todd Archer of ESPN reported Sunday that Scandrick will join his teammates and hopes to have a new deal by the end of the week.
Scandrick signed a six-year, $28.2 million deal in 2011 that included $10 million guaranteed and a $3 million signing bonus. The deal was reworked in 2013. Scandrick is due $3 million each season from 2016 to 2018.
Scandrick is set to make $1.5 million in 2015, which is third-most on the team at his position behind Brandon Carr ($8 million) and Morris Claiborne ($2.6 million).
Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones is optimistic about a deal getting done.
“We stand strong about what a good player he is, how much we need him, how much he helps us,” Jones said last week. “(We) would like to get something satisfactory worked out with him. The last time he asked for the agreement that he has now, he came in and asked for us to look at the agreement and make a change and we did.
“So we’ll talk about the one we changed for him last time. Hopefully we can get something worked out that has the best interest for the Cowboys and also accommodate what he needs to do. We didn’t get anything done (yet), but we’re certainly are talking about it.”
By skipping the workouts up to this point, Scandrick has missed out on a potential $500,000 in workout bonuses, according to Pro Football Talk.
The Cowboys are in the second week of Phase 2 of the offseason program that includes on-field teaching sessions with the coaching staff. Phase 3 of the organized team activities begins May 26 followed by the mandatory minicamp June 16-18.
