Cowboys anticipate QB Romo will play

Published

Tony Romo is likely to be on the field for the Cowboys this week when the Arizona Cardinals visit Dallas, head coach Jason Garrett said Tuesday.

“We anticipate him getting some tests (Tuesday),” said Garrett. “And see where he is.”

Romo was diagnosed Monday with a back contusion and missed two drives in the overtime loss to the Washington Redskins while in the locker room, where X-rays were negative but a pain-killing injection was needed.

Owner Jerry Jones left his private box in the stadium and joined Romo in the locker room. Soon after he made his way to the sideline, where he reported to Garrett that Romo would be back.

“I was here during the tail end of the examination and knew he planned to come back out and play if he were needed,” Jones said. “Of course, he was needed. I felt good that he could come back out. When he saw the opportunity he did. I told Jason that he would be back in.”

Romo convinced medical personnel he was ready to play and despite two scoring drives led by backup Brandon Weeden — one field goal and a touchdown pass to tight end Jason Witten — returned to the game with 1:52 remaining in regulation.

Washington’s blitz packages caused the Cowboys problems throughout the game.

Garrett said Tuesday that Dallas didn’t have an answer for the third-down “casino” blitz on which the Redskins stacked defenders at the line of scrimmage and left their rookie cornerbacks in man coverage without safety help.

Jones said the Cowboys knew there were no structural isues before Romo was allowed out of the locker room.

“We got him in here and looked at it real carefully everybody felt better about it,” Jones said. “But he was certainly limited when he first got in here, but he loosened it up real good and went back out.”

Garrett, when asked Monday night, said there was no thought given to keeping Weeden in the game.

“Obviously, Tony is our quarterback,” Garrett said.
