Coughlin grateful to be back with Giants

INDIANAPOLIS — New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin might feel a bit fortunate to be back for 2015.

“Here we are again,” Coughlin said to open his press conference at the 2015 NFL Scouting Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium on Thursday. “Thank God.”

Coughlin said the contract “is under way” and expects the team to share information on his status for the future soon.

“Security? Security? There’s 32 guys coaching one year at a time,” Coughlin said, responding to a question as to whether he needed the security of a contract extension to stay with the Giants.

The Giants are throwing up a few prayers ahead of March 10, the opening of free agency, that they can find a way to keep defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul. One of the most athletic players in the league at 6-foot-6, Pierre-Paul is scheduled to hit free agency for the first time since the Giants drafted him

“The goal is for him to be a Giant, play as a Giant and retire as a Giant,” Coughlin said. “How that happens is another issue.”

The Giants should get a jolt from the return of wide receiver Victor Cruz, who played in only six games and just two in the same lineup with rookie Odell Beckham Jr. Coughlin said the 28-year-old Cruz is expected to be ready to work by training camp and possibly for a portion of offseason workouts. Coughlin said the improvements by the offense the final month of the season gives the Giants hope for the future.

Will the learning curve be as steep for the Giants on defense in 2015 after changing coordinators in the offseason? Coughlin hopes not.

New York was 29th in the NFL in total defense and last in yards per carry allowed.

To repair that group, Coughlin brought back Steve Spagnuolo, who coordinated the Super Bowl defense as coach from 2007-08.

“I don’t know that to the naked eye you’ll see a lot of difference,” Coughlin said of Spagnuolo’s defensive scheme. “I’m hoping the production will be different.”

Coughlin said the Giants have potential on the roster on the defensive line, but the franchise wants to add pass rushers.

In Spagnuolo’s last tour of duty with the Giants, he had the benefit of anchoring his defensive line with Hall of Fame defensive end Michael Strahan on the other side of Osi Umenyiora.
