Colts sign LB Mathis through 2016, add CB Brown

Published

on

Indianapolis Colts outside linebacker Robert Mathis, out for the season with a torn Achilles, signed a one-year contract extension through 2016.

Mathis signed a four-year, $36 million deal prior to the 2012 season, including a $5 million salary for the 2014 season and $7 million next season.

Mathis, 33, was injured working out on his own in Atlanta and would have been eligible to play for the first time in 2014 this week.

Mathis had 19.5 sacks in 2013, but was suspended four games for testing positive for testosterone, which Mathis and his personal physician claimed was taken for fertility reasons.

The Colts also added cornerback Jalil Brown to the active roster.

Brown has played in 34 career games. He played in five games with the Colts in 2013 and recorded two solo tackles. In 2012 with the Kansas City Chiefs, Brown posted career highs in games played (15), games started (two), tackles (20), passes defensed (two) and forced fumbles (one). He was originally selected by the Chiefs in the fourth round (118th overall) of the 2011 NFL Draft out of the University of Colorado.
