The Indianapolis Colts signed free agent outside linebacker Victor Butler to the active roster and waived outside linebacker Chris Carter on Monday.

The 6-foot-2, 245-pound Butler appeared in 63 career games (two starts) for the Dallas Cowboys from 2009-2012 and totaled 65 tackles, 11 sacks, five passes defensed, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and 40 special teams tackles.

Carter was signed by the Colts as a free agent on Sept. 10 and played in one game this season. He has competed in 30 games (four starts) with the Colts and Pittsburgh Steelers (2011-13) over the past four seasons and holds career totals of eight tackles, one fumble recovery and nine special teams stops. He was originally selected by the Steelers in the fifth round of the 2011 draft out of Fresno State.
