Colts sign first-round WR Dorsett
The Sports Xchange
The Indianapolis Colts signed first-round wide receiver Phillip Dorsett to a four-year contract Wednesday.
The 5-foot-1, 185-pound Dorsett was drafted by the Colts as the 29th overall pick of the 2015 NFL Draft.
The speedster is expected to battle for playing time with second-year wide receiver Donte Moncrief, former CFL standout Duron Carter, ex-San Diego wide receiver Vincent Brown and third-year veteran Griff Whalen.
Primarily a slot receiver, Dorsett — who was clocked at 4.29 and 4.27 seconds in a 40-yard dash at his Pro Day — is also expected to be used on special teams as a punt and kickoff returner.
Dorsett played in 45 games (30 starts) at the University of Miami and registered 121 receptions for 2,132 yards (17.6 average) and 17 touchdowns with a long catch of 79 yards which went for a touchdown. His 23.3 yards per catch average in his final two collegiate seasons was the most in the Football Bowl Subdivision.
Dorsett also contributed on special teams and recorded 25 punt returns for 477 yards (19.1 average) and 25 punt returns for 136 yards over his four-year career with the Hurricanes.
Dorsett started all 13 games as a senior in 2014 and finished with 36 catches for 871 yards and 10 touchdowns. His 24.2 yards per catch average ranked second in the nation as Dorsett garnered second team All-ACC honors for his efforts.
The Colts have signed six of their eight 2015 draft picks. The team’s two third-round selections — cornerback D’Joun Smith and defensive end Henry Anderson — remain unsigned.
