Colts promote LB Herrera

The Indianapolis Colts elevated inside linebacker Amarlo Herrera to the 53-man roster from the practice squad on Saturday and released return specialist Marcus Thigpen.

Herrera’s promotion may be because linebackers Jerrell Freeman (groin) and Nate Irving (knee) are both listed as questionable for Sunday night’s game against the New England Patriots.

The 6-foot-1, 249-pound Herrera was signed to the Colts’ practice squad on Sept. 8. He was selected by the Colts in the sixth round of the 2015 NFL Draft out of Georgia.

The 5-9, 200-pound Thigpen was signed by the Colts as a free agent on Oct. 12. He played the first four weeks of the season with the Buffalo Bills before being released on Oct. 7. Thigpen has played in 45 career games and totaled 85 punt returns for 847 yards (10.0 avg.) and two touchdowns and 92 kickoff returns for 2,224 yards (24.2 avg.) and one touchdown. He has caught nine passes for 112 yards and one touchdown and has seven rushes for 26 yards.
