Colts ink Cole; bigger moves imminent?
Outside linebacker Trent Cole agreed to join the Indianapolis Colts on Tuesday.
Cole was released by the Philadelphia Eagles and reunites with general manager Ryan Grigson, who was in the personnel department in Philadelphia before he came to Indianapolis. The Colts also signed Eagles cast-off Todd Herremans, who can play guard or tackle.
Indianapolis grabbed headlines Tuesday morning when reports surfaced that University of Miami products Frank Gore and Andre Johnson could be coming to the Colts as a package deal. Gore, who turns 32 this year, and Johson, soon to be 34, would not be long-term fixtures with the franchise. But the Colts are clearly loading up for a run in 2015 after being dismissed from the postseason by the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship game in January.
Cole will pair with Robert Mathis to give the Colts a feared edge-rushing tandem.
Mathis is on the wrong side of 30 and missed all of last season with an Achilles injury.
Cole, 32, played for the Eagles for 10 seasons and ranks second in franchise history, behind Hall of Famer Reggie White, with 85.5 sacks.
In 2014, he tallied 52 tackles and 6.5 sacks in 15 games.
Cole played in 155 games, starting 145, for the Eagles. He was named to the Pro Bowl in 2007 and 2009.
