Colts CBs Davis and Toler expected to play

Published

Indianapolis Colts cornerbacks Vontae Davis and Greg Toler are both listed as questionable for the AFC Championship Game, but coach Chuck Pagano said Friday that he “absolutely” expects them to play against the New England Patriots on Sunday.

Both were injured in the divisional playoff win over the Denver Broncos last weekend — Davis has a knee issue and Toler a groin. They did not practice Wednesday and were limited Thursday and Friday.

“We’re just taking care of them,” Pagano said. “We’re just trying to make the best decisions to get them to Sunday healthy and ready to go. So it wouldn’t be wise to do certain things right now and risk that.”

Davis said he had no doubt he would play Sunday.

“It’s a long season. It’s just one of those things,” he said. “Just having a day off of rest, you can make strides as far as your body.”

Davis, the Miami Dolphins’ first-round pick in 2009, has had his best season — tying a career high with four interceptions and breaking up a career-best 19 passes. He also forced two fumbles.

“I feel like I put it all together this year as far as preparation and how I approach the game,” he said. “That comes with time. I grasped the game really well this year. I took coaching well, coach Pagano, coach (Greg) Manusky, they helped my learning curve.”

The Colts will need Davis and Toler against a New England passing attack led by quarterback Tom Brady and tight end Rob Gronkowski. Brady threw for 367 yards and three touchdowns in the Patriots’ 35-31 divisional playoff win over the Baltimore Ravens last week.

“He’s the ultimate competitor I’ve ever been around,” Davis said of Brady. “When I was in Miami, when I was here, Tom doesn’t go into a game not expecting to win. That’s what he brings to the game. That’s why he’s a special player, a future Hall of Famer, his makeup.”
