College Football Blog: CFP Committee Has Inconsistencies
Find out some of the major inconsistencies about this week’s College Football Playoff Rankings.
The latest College Football Playoff Rankings are out and thanks to Alabama’s 25-20 victory over former No. 1 Mississippi State, they are the new team sitting in the pole position.
The rest of the top four features Oregon, Florida State and Mississippi State.
The committee preaches about strength of schedule and strength of victories over “good losses” but it looks a little empty when you consider that Alabama’s victory over Mississippi State is the only one on their resume over a current top 25 team. They do have a really good loss against Ole Miss, who’s currently ranked eighth.
Looking at second-ranked Oregon’s case, they have blowout victories over 11th-ranked Michigan State, ninth-ranked UCLA (on the road) and 17th-ranked Utah (also on the road). Their sole loss came against 15th-ranked Arizona.
Florida State is the only undefeated team in the CFP’s top 25. The ‘Noles have two victories over CFP top 25 teams in 22nd-ranked Clemson (without FSU’s starting quarterback) and 24th-ranked Louisville (on the road).
Fourth-ranked Mississippi State’s resume is looking emptier by the week. The Bulldogs’ lone top 25 victory came against a three-loss Auburn team currently ranked 14th. They have a great loss against top-ranked Alabama, but that’s about it.
Just for fun, let’s throw in fifth-ranked TCU’s resume. They fell one spot to fifth after a narrow 34-30 victory on the road at Kansas. Aside from that victory they have top 25 wins over 25th-ranked Minnesota, 21st-ranked Oklahoma and 12th-ranked Kansas State. Their lone loss came on the road at seventh-ranked Baylor.
After looking at the resume’s of the top five teams, it’s difficult to make sense of the committee’s choices. Apparently a “good loss” is valued over top 25 wins, as evidenced by Alabama and Mississippi State, but somehow TCU’s “good loss” (that came on the road) doesn’t quite stack up.
Mississippi State “hanging in there” against Alabama and Alabama “hanging in there” against Ole Miss carries more weight than Florida State finding ways to win every single week going back to the 2012 season.
Here are some more questions.
If FSU’s title from last year doesn’t have any carryover (and it shouldn’t), how can the perceived SEC dominance have carryover?
If TCU’s wins are weak, why are those teams ranked in the CFP’s top 25?
Oregon has the most top 25 wins over the highest currently ranked teams and they did it in blowout fashion. Their loss was also against a top 15 program (current ranking) but that resume that appears to be the very best in the nation apparently is behind Alabama and their lone top 25 victory.
It’s understood that there’s no completely fair way to choose four teams for a playoff with resume’s that are so similar. There are just some major inconsistencies with the committee’s results which contradict most of what they preach is important.
