Chiefs WR Avery out with core muscle injury

Published

on

In the Kansas City Chiefs blowout win over the New England Patriots on Monday night, wide receiver Donnie Avery suffered a core muscle injury. The Chiefs clarified the injury Wednesday after the injury was previously called a sports hernia.

“What happens in that injury is your abductor group or your groin muscles either strain or tear and then you get some pulling away of your abdominal muscle,” Chiefs head trainer Rick Burkholder said. “Those things generally need to be fixed so Donnie is on his way right now to Philadelphia today to be fixed tomorrow by Dr. Bill Meyers. He has a core muscle injury, needs to be fixed.”

Avery and his 14 catches for 156 yards in four games will be out this week with further updates to come, according to Burkholder.

With Avery out against the San Francisco 49ers, wide receiver AJ Jenkins should get the chance to step in.

“Yeah, that’s accurate to say and as you’ve seen in the last couple of ball games we play a multitude of guys, but A.J. will get his opportunity,” Chiefs offensive coordinator Doug Pederson said.
