Chiefs reportedly sign WR Maclin
Wide receiver Jeremy Maclin, a Missouri native who played for the University of Missouri, likely is headed back to his home state.
The free agent wide receiver agreed to a contract with the Kansas City Chiefs, multiple media outlets reported Sunday. Maclin, formerly of the Philadelphia Eagles, will again play under Andy Reid, the Chiefs coach who was formerly the Eagles’ boss.
Maclin, 26, was a Pro Bowler for the first time last season. He posted career-high numbers in 2014, catching 85 passes for 1,318 yards and 10 touchdowns. He missed the 2013 season after tearing an anterior cruciate ligament in training camp.
A 2009 first-round draft pick, Maclin caught 343 passes for 4,771 yards and 36 touchdowns in five healthy seasons as a member of the Eagles. Philadelphia occasionally used him on punt returns, and in his rookie season, he returned kickoffs, too.
The free agent deal can’t be finalized until the NFL’s new working year begins Tuesday. The Chiefs will need to clear money to be able to add Maclin, as they are already over the salary cap.
Speculation about possibility salary-cap casualties includes wide receiver Dwayne Bowe, who is due to count $14 million against the cap in 2015. Bowe had 60 receptions for 754 yards and no touchdowns last season.
