Chiefs’ Charles, McKnight ready for run at Patriots

Published

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Running backs Jamaal Charles and Joe McKnight were limited in practice Thursday as the Kansas City Chiefs prepared for a Monday night visit by the New England Patriots.

Charles is still bothered by an ankle he sprained on Sept. 14. The Chiefs are fairly confident that Charles should be available for duty against New England.

McKnight has an Achilles tendon problem that the team believes is not a major issue. McKnight is becoming a bigger part of the Chiefs offense and a factor on the special teams as well.

During his career, McKnight has enjoyed returning kickoffs against the Patriots. During his time with the Jets, McKnight averaged 28.9 yards on 22 kickoff returns against New England.

Running back/receiver De’Anthony Thomas was a limited participant in practice Thursday because of the hamstring injury he suffered Sept. 3. Since that day, Thomas missed three games and participated in just one practice. The Chiefs appear fairly confident that he will be available Monday night.

However, safety Eric Berry did not practice because of the sprained ankle he suffered on Sept. 14.

“Eric’s ankle, it’s a little different deal,” coach Andy Reid said. “It’s right where the high ankle sprain component comes in. Right now, it’s leaning more to a high ankle sprain. You just don’t know. He’s trying like crazy to get back, but he won’t practice today and then we’ll just have to see.”

Outside linebacker Tamba Hali was a limited participant Thursday because of ankle and knee injuries that he has been dealing with since the beginning of the month. Hali is expected to play Monday night.

Cornerback Sean Smith (groin) was a limited participant in practice on Thursday and the Chiefs expect Smith will be able to play.
