ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — Quarterback Alex Smith and running back Jamaal Charles rushed for fourth quarter touchdowns to lead the Kansas City Chiefs in a 17-13 comeback victory over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.

The Chiefs (6-3) have won six of their last seven, while the Bills (5-4) had a two-game winning streak snapped.

Charles rushed for 69 of his 98 yards in the second half. Smith was 17-of-29 passing for 177 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions. Wide receiver Dwayne Bowe caught eight passes for 93 yards.

Smith scored on an 8-yard run to give Kansas City its first lead, 17-13, with just under nine minutes left to play.

The go-ahead score was facilitated by fullback Anthony Sherman forcing and recovering a fumble by Bills punt returner Leodis McKelvin at the Buffalo 26. Charles ran for 18 yards on the play before the touchdown.

Kansas City’s defense stopped the Bills on downs at the 15 with 2:31 remaining following a 23-yard McKelvin punt return that gave the Bills a drive start at the Chiefs’ 25.

Charles converted a fourth-and-1, then cut back and sprinted 39 yards for a touchdown that brought the Chiefs within 13-10 at 13:30 in the fourth quarter. Bowe caught four passes for 45 yards on the 80-yard drive.

The Bills gained 144 yards and held the ball for 10:15 of the third quarter, but could only turn it into three points. After driving 73 yards, the Bills stalled in the red zone and settled for a 21-yard field goal from Dan Carpenter that made it 13-3 with 3:06 left in the third quarter.

Buffalo led 10-3 at halftime and appeared to be driving for another score on the opening series of the second half when Chiefs cornerback Ron Parker knocked the ball loose from Bills running back Bryce Brown at the 5-yard line, and Bills tight end Scott Chandler knocked the ball out of the back of the end zone for a touchback.

Orton found wide receiver Chris Hogan up the seam for a 25-yard touchdown pass that put the Bills up 7-0 five minutes into the game. The drive was aided by McKelvin’s 22-yard punt return to midfield.

Kansas City responded with a 62-yard drive that ended with Cairo Santos’ 36-yard field goal at 5:27 of the first quarter.

Bills linebacker Nigel Bradham forced a fumble by Chiefs running back Knile Davis that was recovered by defensive tackle Jarius Wynn at the 31, leading to Carpenter’s 26-yard field goal with 7:13 remaining in the second quarter.

NOTES: Chiefs RB Jamal Charles sustained a neck stinger in the first half but returned to the game. … Bills RB Fred Jackson returned after missing one game with a groin injury. Jackson was listed as questionable on the injury report, and Bills coach Doug Marrone said Thursday that Jackson was “not ready” to play this week. … Bills WR Sammy Watkins also played after being listed as questionable with a groin injury.
