Chico’s Hell Week prepped Rodgers for Miami heat
GREEN BAY, Wis. — Aaron Rodgers likes when the temperature goes up — literally.
“It’s just like a nice August day in Chico,” said the Green Bay Packers star quarterback, naming his hometown in northern California.
Rodgers referenced his formative years of playing football at Pleasant Valley High School in Chico when asked about the preparations being made for the conditions forecast for the Packers’ visit to south Florida this weekend.
The temperature is supposed to be in the mid-80s with a high humidity of 70-plus percent for Green Bay’s game against the Miami Dolphins at Sun Life Stadium.
“It’s not that humid (in Chico), but it’s hot,” Rodgers said. “Back in Hell Week, we called it, which was two weeks of practice before school started, it was 90 (degrees) usually by 9 in the morning. I grew up playing in the heat.
“It’ll be different for us (Sunday), but we like to keep a fast tempo (on offense), so it will be tough on them, too.”
While coach Mike McCarthy stated the obvious Wednesday — “We’ve been on the field too much defensively … (and) offensively, we need to have some longer drives” — it’s hard to imagine the Packers not sticking with what has been working best.
After the heat figuratively was on the three-time reigning NFC North champions after they started the season 1-2, they responded with thorough knockouts in their last two games against division rivals Chicago and Minnesota. Fueled by a high-octane, no-huddle attack that rarely expended much time on the clock, Green Bay outscored the Bears and the Vikings by a whopping 80-27.
Now, Green Bay is well-rested and getting properly hydrated for Sunday’s tropical atmosphere after being idle since the 42-10 drubbing of Minnesota on Oct. 2. The Packers will face a Dolphins team, led by onetime Green Bay offensive coordinator Joe Philbin, that is coming off its bye week.
“We had a lot of time — well, more days than usual — off without it being a bye week,” running back Eddie Lacy said. “So we got our bodies time to prepare and recover going into this week. We’re hoping to pick up where we left off.”
With the Packers (3-2) back atop the NFC North again after their initial hiccup, Rodgers said a team playing with renewed confidence has its sights on finishing the first half of the season with a flourish. Green Bay’s true bye week this season comes after its eighth game, Oct. 26 at New Orleans, after a home date with Carolina on Oct. 19.
“I think guys appreciated the weekend off,” said Rodgers, alluding to a three-day break the players received after the last game. “Mike did us a solid there giving us some time off on the weekend to relax. I don’t think we have a lot of injury issues, and we’re ready to play. We’re 3-2, got a three-game stretch here before the bye, and we’re trying to finish 6-2.”
NOTES: OLB Julius Peppers was named NFC Defensive Player of the Week for his work in the 42-10 rout of the Minnesota Vikings in prime time on Oct. 2, including a 49-yard interception return for a touchdown and a half sack that made him the first player in NFL history to have at least 100 sacks and 10 interceptions in his career. … Among players not practicing Wednesday were DE Datone Jones (ankle) and WR Jarrett Boykin (groin). Taking part in practice on a limited basis Wednesday were DL Josh Boyd (knee) and ILB Sam Barrington (hamstring).
