SAN DIEGO — Wide receiver Keenan Allen of the San Diego Chargers was on his way to a sensational season when he sustained a lacerated kidney in Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens while making a touchdown catch.

Instead of sensational, this becomes a lost season for him.

Allen was among the league-leaders in receptions until getting hurt. He leads the Chargers with 67 receptions for 725 yards and four touchdowns. His 67 catches were the second-most in NFL history through eight games.

He was on pace for a 134 receptions, which would have broken the team record of 100 set by LaDainian Tomlinson in 2003.

–Wide receiver/kick returner Jacoby Jones was released after returning five punts for a minus-4 yards. Jones was signed in the offseason to a two-year, $5.5 million contract. He will get about $2.5 million.

With Jones getting the heave-ho, Javontee Herndon was elevated from the practice squad. He was clearly the better returner during the preseason, but the Chargers hoped Jones would deliver more of a spark.

Herndon had nine punt-returns for 30 yards and a kick- return for 22 yards in the preseason. Coach Mike McCoy was pretty clear why Jones was shown the door. “It was in the best interest of the team,” he said.

–Free safety Eric Weddle’s name was mentioned in some trade rumors but nothing happened. The trade deadline was Tuesday, 4 p.m. EST.

Weddle is in the last year of his contract and the Chargers have been clear that they don’t expect to bring him back next season. He did return to practice on Wednesday and is hopeful for Monday.

“I’m feeling really good; we’ll see how the week progresses and if I’m able to ramp things up,” Weddle said.

–The city of San Diego will present its plans to build a stadium to the NFL on Nov. 11. It will be joined by St. Louis and Oakland, two other cities in jeopardy of losing their teams to Los Angeles.

NOTES: Running back Branden Oliver (foot) was placed on injured reserve and is out for season. … Outside linebacker Tourek Williams (leg) is also gone for the season on injured reserve. . . . Left tackle King Dunlap (ankle) didn’t practice Wednesday and it looks like a long shot that he’s able to go on Monday. . . . Tight end Ladarius Green (leg) has not practiced practice after being injured last Sunday. … Center Chris Watt (shoulder), wide receiver Stevie Johnson (shoulder) and inside linebacker Denzel Perryman (biceps) practiced Wednesday. … Tackle Chris Hairston (ankle) missed practice after leaving Sunday’s game. … Defensive end Corey Liuget (foot) left the game on a cart and has yet to return to practice. … Tight end Antonio Gates (knee) was able to play Sunday but was compromised. He will be limited in practice this week. … Inside linebacker Manti Te’o (ankle) has missed three straight games and didn’t practice Wednesday, but might play this week. … Offensive lineman J. D. Walton and defensive lineman Damion Square were signed. … Cornerback Patrick Robinson (concussion) returned to practice after leaving Sunday’s game.
