Chargers sign QB Rivers to four-year extension

The San Diego Chargers signed quarterback Philip Rivers to a four-year extension Saturday that will keep him with the team through 2019.

The deal is worth $84 million, with $65 million guaranteed, according to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

The deal ends months of speculation about whether Rivers would be with the Chargers beyond the 2015 season.

Rivers, 33, was entering the final year of his contract and was due to make $15.75 million. He had said he would be comfortable playing out the contract, but the Chargers reportedly were ready to place the franchise tag on him next offseason if a deal could not be reached.

When he reported to training camp on July 30, he said of contract talks: “We’re having dialogue. If it happens, I would be super excited. If it doesn’t happen, I’ll be super excited about the team right now.”

Reports earlier this year had hinted that Rivers was hesitant no re-sign because the Chargers are a candidate to move to Los Angeles as soon as next year.
