Chancellor still away from Seahawks’ training camp

RENTON, Wash. — Seattle Seahawks strong safety Kam Chancellor continues to hold out and it’s unclear when he will return.

Coach Pete Carroll said the fact that quarterback Russell Wilson and linebacker Bobby Wagner have now signed extensions means the Seahawks can turn to other matters. But the Seahawks also are known to be reluctant to do much with Chancellor because he has three years left on his deal and they are worried about setting a precedent.

If they do anything, it might be guaranteeing some money in his deal that currently is not guaranteed — similar to what they did last year for running back Marshawn Lynch when he held out the first week of training camp.

–Free safety Earl Thomas remains out while recovering from offseason shoulder surgery, and it’s unclear when he will be back. Teammate Richard Sherman said Sunday, though, that he can’t imagine that Thomas will miss a game because he has never missed a game in his NFL career, making 80 straight regular-season starts.

With Thomas and Chancellor out, the Seahawks are going with Steven Terrell as their starting free safety and DeShawn Shead as the starting strong safety. Each has also played cornerback in the past but is concentrating on safety now, with the team having sudden depth issues at that spot.

–The Seahawks largely have avoided injury the first four days of training camp, having not lost anyone for any significant time. The only real injury came when fullback Derrick Coleman aggravated a hamstring on Friday. He is expected to be out about a week.

–Safety Dion Bailey, a second-year player trying to make the team, missed the first three days with a hamstring injury but returned Monday.

–The Seahawks on Sunday traded a sixth-round pick to Detroit for second-year cornerback Mohammed Seisay. He practiced with the Seahawks for the first time on Monday and is expected to be used primarily on the outside to begin his Seattle career.
