Chance of rain, sleet as Packers face Vikings outdoors

GREEN BAY, Wisc. — For the first time in 33 years, the Green Bay Packers will be playing the Vikings in Minnesota at an outdoor stadium.

And not that either of these fabled frigid franchises would admit concern, the forecast according to NFLWeather.com shows a chance of rain and sleet with a high near 39 degrees with a 40 percent chance of rain.

The Vikings are playing their home games this season and also in 2015 at TCF Bank Stadium on the campus of University of Minnesota as a new stadium to replace the old Metrodome is constructed in downtown Minneapolis.

“I liked the Metrodome,” Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. “I thought it was a great environment. It definitely leads the away games for taking Advil after it. The crowd noise (there), real and not so real, I thought really beats you up by the end of the day. But, the environment in there was incredible.

“It was a unique home-field advantage for the Vikings. I’m not going to say I’ve missed it, but I enjoyed playing there.”

While the Packers’ struggles in the Metrodome during the Brett Favre era were notorious, his successor at quarterback fared better in recent seasons. After taking two losses his first two years as Green Bay’s starting quarterback, Aaron Rodgers won three of the Packers’ last four games at the venue.

“We had a lot of great battles there, a lot of good memories,” Rodgers said. “I look forward to that being a road dome game at some point again” with the opening of the covered Vikings Stadium in 2016.

Green Bay last faced the Vikings in a road game outside on Nov. 29, 1981, at Metropolitan Stadium, where Mall of America now sits in the Twin Cities suburb of Bloomington. The Packers won that game 35-23.

Sunday’s matchup will be the second game between the Packers and Vikings on the University of Minnesota campus. The Vikings prevailed 19-7 at Minnesota’s old Memorial Stadium on Oct. 5, 1969, in the inaugural pro football game played at a Big Ten Conference stadium.
