CFB roundup: Buckeyes’ Spence suspended again

Published

on

Ohio State was expecting to have All-Big Ten defensive end Noah Spence available when the Buckeyes host Kent State on Saturday.

But because of a second violation of Big Ten rules, the university on Friday ruled Spence ineligible.

Spence, an Academic All-Big Ten honoree and a two-time OSU Scholar-Athlete, was suspended for three games — the Orange Bowl last season and the first two games of this season — because traces of ecstasy were found in his system after a drug test at the Big Ten title game.

In an email to The Columbus Dispatch, his parents stressed that his football career is secondary because their son has come clean about having a “medical illness.”

“We love him dearly, and our focus is to get him the best medical attention we can,” Greg and Helen Spence said. “We are hopeful that Noah can get healthy and, at some point, resume his career with the Buckeyes.”

–The University of Miami suspended defensive end Al-Quadin Muhammad for the 2014 season following a fight with a roommate.

The school also said Muhammad is no longer enrolled at the school. He will be allowed to return next semester, but a Miami spokesman said Muhammad’s plans are unknown.

The Miami Herald reported that the Hurricanes football staff did not agree with the action taken by the vice president of student affairs. “He’s sorely missed,” Golden said earlier this week. “He’s a great kid. … one of our leaders.”

–The Oregon Ducks will have the services of running back Thomas Tyner when they play Wyoming on Saturday. A shoulder injury kept Tyner on the sidelines in the fourth quarter of last week’s game against Michigan State.

Oregon lists Tyner as the starting tailback. He is averaging 12 carries and almost 50 yards a game for the Ducks after two games. Freshman Royce Freeman leads the team with 164 rushing yards and four touchdowns.
