CB Williams expected to join ‘Legion of Boom’

Published

on

The Seattle Seahawks are expected to sign veteran cornerback Cary Williams to replace Byron Maxwell, who is set to sign with the Philadelphia Eagles when free agency begins at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday.

Ironically, the 30-year-old Williams was released by the Eagles in part so the team could clear $6.5 million in base salary and an $8.17 million salary cap figure next season to court free agents including Maxwell. Williams has also been considering offers from the Tennessee Titans and New York Jets, but is expected to choose the Seahawks.

In Seattle, Williams will replace Maxwell in the “Legion of Boom.” The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Williams is a physical fit for the taller cornerbacks the Seahawks prefer in their scheme. He was rated as the 49th overall cornerback by ProFootballFocus.com last season among corners who played at least 25 percent of their team’s snaps, while Maxwell was tied for 45th.

The Seahawks also signed 30-year-old Will Blackmon on Monday to provide depth. Maxwell will reportedly join Philadelphia on Tuesday, Jeremy Lane is recovering from a broken arm and torn ACL suffered in the Super Bowl and Tharold Simon is recovering from shoulder surgery.

Blackmon, was picked up by the Jacksonville Jaguars after being cut by Seattle in 2013 and played in 23 games, starting 11, for the Jaguars over the past two seasons.

The Jaguars released him Feb. 26.

In 2013, he tallied 40 tackles, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and an interception. Last season, he had 28 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble but missed the final eight games with a broken finger.

Blackmon, a fourth-round pick by the Green Bay Packers in 2006, has played nine years with the Packers (2006-09), New York Giants (2010-11) and Jaguars.

Seattle announced two other roster moves Monday, signing linebacker Mike Morgan and tight end Anthony McCoy to contract extensions.

Morgan, 27, spent the past four seasons with the Seahawks after signing as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Southern California in July 2011. He appeared in five games as a rookie, then played every game the next three years, compiling a total of 40 tackles in 53 games (one start).

Morgan scored a touchdown in October against the Dallas Cowboys, returning a blocked punt 25 yards.

McCoy, 27, appeared in 34 games for Seattle from 2010-12 and made 14 starts. He spent each of the past two seasons on injured reserve due to Achilles problems. For his career, he has 31 catches for 437 yards and three touchdowns.
