CB Claiborne back with Cowboys

Published

on

Dallas Cowboys cornerback Morris Claiborne, who skipped the team’s walk-through practice the day before and angrily left the training facility, rejoined the team Wednesday morning to participate in meetings.

ESPN.com reported that Claiborn is expected to play Sunday night against the New Orleans Saints and whatever disciplinary action coach Jason Garrett might take against him apparently does not currently involve making him inactive for the game.

“He will be OK long term,” a source told ESPN of Claiborne. “He has rejoined the team and is participating in regular meetings. We need him. It’s a long season. Just a bruised ego.”

Claiborne left the club’s Valley Ranch training facility Tuesday after being informed that Orlando Scandrick was replacing him in the starting lineup, multiple sources said.

Scandrick missed the first two weeks of the season while serving a two-game suspension, and Claiborne started two of the Cowboys’ first three games.

Claiborne’s demotion came a few hours after owner Jerry Jones said Tuesday on his weekly radio show that the third-year cornerback had not been worth the sixth pick of the 2012 draft, which Dallas moved up to acquire.

“Is he what we had hoped for at this point when we drafted him with the sixth overall pick, giving up the (second-round) pick to go up to the sixth pick to get him? No,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan. “But he’s going to be a good player.”

Claiborne allowed five receptions for 108 yards and a 51-yard touchdown pass as the St. Louis Rams took a 21-0 second-quarter lead before the Cowboys rallied to win 34-31 Sunday. Claiborne also gave up a 38-yard catch and was penalized once for defensive holding, but he made an interception to clinch the victory. After the game, Claiborne said he “stunk it up.”
