Carroll: Seahawks, Lynch ‘working through it’
In response to continuing reports that the Seattle Seahawks and running back Marshawn Lynch have a fractured relationship and are headed for a divorce at the end of the season, coach Pete Carroll said Monday, “We’re working through it.”
Two more stories from NFL.com Sunday fanned the flames as Ian Rapoport repeated earlier reports that the Seahawks will part with Lynch after the season — despite one more year left on his contract.
NFL.com’s Mike Silver said Lynch, who held out in the summer and received a minor adjustment to his deal, blames the Seahawks for the ongoing reports of a pending split.
Asked about it after the Seahawks’ 24-20 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, Lynch said, “Do I think I’ll be gone after this season? I don’t know, man. The Seahawks, their front office gets in the media; they talk a lot. I don’t talk too much. I just play the game. If they have something going on, I don’t know about it.”
Lynch remained on the field during halftime Sunday, prompting speculation that he was staging another protest, but Carroll said the running back felt it would be best to stay on the field and keep his sore back loose. Lynch also is playing with calf and rib injuries.
“He’s just flat banged up,” Carroll said during his Monday morning radio show on 710 ESPN Seattle.
As for the relationship between the player and the team, Carroll acknowledged that Lynch might still hold a grudge over his contract.
Lynch signed a four-year, $31 million contract in 2012, but he felt he was underpaid at $5 million this year, so he stayed away from training camp for a week until the team adjusted his deal, paying him an extra $1.5 million guaranteed. He is due a $2 million roster bonus next offseason, in addition to a $5 million salary.
“I think (it) still goes back to summertime, talking about the contract and stuff like that,” Carroll said. “There was some conversations that not everything always works out exactly the way you want it.
“Years later in the contract, you look at it, well, it’s not quite the same deal. I think we had plenty of conversations about that in the summertime. He made his decisions to stay out and we respected that, too. We had no problem with that.
“So, as we’re moving forward,” Carroll added, “he’s giving us everything he’s got and we’re working through it, and that’s where that is right now. This football team is determined to do well. We still have a lot out there. This is a tremendous finish opportunity and Marshawn, hopefully if he can get back again this week, he’ll be right in the middle of it with us.”
