Cardinals sign LB Sharpton

The Arizona Cardinals signed free agent linebacker Darryl Sharpton to a one-year contract Wednesday

To make room on the roster, the team released safety Eddie Whitley.

The 5-foot-11, 235-pound Sharpton is a five-year NFL veteran who played last season with the Chicago Bears after spending his first four seasons with the Houston Texans. He entered the league with the Texans as a fourth-round pick (102nd overall) in the 2010 NFL Draft out of Miami.

In his four seasons with Houston (2010-13), Sharpton played in 42 games with 19 starts before joining the Bears last season. In 2014, he played in five games (two starts), collecting 27 tackles, two passes defensed and three quarterback pressures.

Sharpton’s best season was in 2013 with the Texans when he played in 15 games (eight starts) and set a career high with 87 tackles. For his career, the 27-year old Sharpton has appeared in 47 games (21 starts) and has recorded 171 tackles, five passes defensed, one sack, one interception, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.
