Cardinals release Ginn
The Arizona Cardinals released wide receiver/kick returner Ted Ginn Jr. on Monday.
Ginn played just one year of the three-year, $9.75 million deal he signed a year ago. He made $3.25 million in 2014, working mainly as a return specialist. He returned 22 kickoffs for 417 yards and 26 punts for 277 yards and a touchdown.
He caught just 14 receptions for 190 yards.
If Ginn had been on the roster on March 12, $2 million of his $3.25 million salary for 2015 would have become guaranteed. The Cardinals saved $2.5 million vs. the salary cap by releasing him.
The Cardinals are in good shape at wide receiver, particularly after re-signing Larry Fitzgerald to a two-year deal worth $22 million guaranteed. Coach Bruce Arians said knee injuries limited Fitzgerald’s role last season, when he caught just 63 passes for 784 yards (the lowest numbers since his rookie season), and the coach expects 31-year-old to be more effective in 2015.
Arians also is expecting second-year wide receiver John Brown to be more involved in the offense. The third-round pick caught 48 passes for 696 yards and five touchdowns.
Michael Floyd is expected to get more chances, too, after a year in which Arians said he “left yards on the field by trying so damn hard.” Floyd caught just 47 of 99 passes his way for 841 yards and six scores.
