Unable to come to agreement on a reconfigured contract with Darnell Dockett, the Arizona Cardinals released the veteran defensive tackle on Friday.

The team still wants him back, just not at the $6.8 million he was scheduled to be paid in the final year of a four-year, $35.3 million contract he signed in 2012.

“We have been very clear about our feelings for Darnell and our desire to have him back,” general manager Steve Keim said in a written statement. “After speaking with him and his representatives, we decided that this move today makes the most sense for both the team and the player and allows each to keep all of its options open.”

Dockett, 33, missed the 2014 season with a torn ACL suffered in practice Aug. 18.

A third-round pick in 2004, Dockett had played in 158 games over his 10 years with the Cardinals. He made the Pro Bowl in 2007, 2009 and 2010.

In 2013, his most recent healthy season, Dockett recorded 46 tackles and 4.5 sacks. In his 10-year career, he has 459 tackles and 40.5 sacks, plus four interceptions.

Dockett joins a growing list of veteran defensive tackles on the open market less than two weeks before the league year begins and dozens more players hit free agency.

Among the other defensive tackles who have been released this week are Barry Cofield and Stephen Bowen (Washington Redskins), Chris Canty (Baltimore Ravens), Robert Geathers (Cincinnati Bengals) and Kendall Langford (St. Louis Rams).
