Cardinals QB Stanton could be back for playoffs

Published

on

Arizona Cardinals coach Bruce Arians said quarterback Drew Stanton has an “85 percent” chance to be back for the playoffs.

Stanton is likely out of Sunday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers to give his right knee time to heal, but Arians is hoping Stanton will be ready for the Cardinals’ first postseason game since 2009.

“He’s going to practice some this week, and we’ll see how he goes,” Arians said Tuesday night on SiriusXM NFL Radio. “Do not plan on playing him this week unless it was absolutely necessary.”

The Cardinals likely will end up playing in a wild-card game during the first weekend of January, although they could move up in the playoff seedings depending what happens with other teams ahead of them in the regular-season finales.

Rookie Logan Thomas has been named the starting quarterback for Sunday, but Arians insists the decision is not a reflection on how Ryan Lindley played against the Seattle Seahawks in last Sunday night’s 35-6 loss. Lindley completed only 18 of 44 passes for 216 yards, no touchdowns and one interception.

Arians said Thomas will get the first-team snaps this week and will play at least the first half in San Francisco. Lindley may come into the game if Thomas struggles.

“You got to turn over every stone going into the playoffs,” Arians said. “It doesn’t have anything to do with how Ryan played last week. I need to find out what Logan can do going into the playoffs.”
