Cardinals pick up CB Dennard

The Arizona Cardinals claimed cornerback Alfonzo Dennard off waivers on Wednesday after he was released by the New England Patriots.

The 25-year-old Dennard spent the past three seasons with the Patriots. He played in 29 games, starting 20, and logged 92 tackles, five interceptions, 17 passes defensed, one fumble recovery and one forced fumble.

In 2014, Dennard played in six games, including four starts, and had 15 tackles, one interception and one fumble recovery before he went on injured reserve Dec. 27 with a hamstring issue after seeing decreased playing time.

Dennard, a seventh-round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft from Nebraska, began his pro career amid injuries and legal issues. He slid down draft boards in 2012 after being arrested on a felony assault charge against a police officer in an incident outside of a Lincoln, Neb., bar. Dennard then violated his probation by being arrested for driving under the influence in 2013 and served 35 of a possible 60 days in a Nebraska detention center last year.

With the Cardinals, Dennard likely will be behind veteran cornerbacks Patrick Peterson and Jerraud Powers.

The Patriots parted ways with Dennard despite losing starting cornerbacks Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner in free agency. The Patriots did add veterans Bradley Fletcher, Chimdi Chekwa and Robert McClain to a depth chart that includes Kyle Arrington, Malcolm Butler and Logan Ryan.
