Cardinals confirm loss of Palmer to ACL tear
Arizona Cardinals coach Bruce Arians confirmed Monday that quarterback Carson Palmer suffered a torn ACL in his left knee during Sunday’s game against the St. Louis Rams and will be placed on season-ending injured reserve.
Palmer is scheduled to undergo surgery in two weeks after the swelling in his knee subsides, Arians said.
“The news on Carson is that it is an ACL,” Arians said during Monday’s news conference. “There is no MCL (injury), no cartilage. So he’s looking for a June, July return. … It’s one of those things, a non-contact injury.
“He knows the long tedious process he’s in for. It’s just a shame it happened now. … I knew walking out on the field what I was going to find. You’re pulling for a guy to win some playoff games. This team is special. We’ll miss him on the field. But his leadership will still be there.”
Palmer said he “felt a pop” and knew his season was over.
“I’m not going to lie, I cried like a baby last night,” said Palmer, who just two days earlier signed a three-year contract extension worth a reported $50 million, including $20.5 million guaranteed.
“I’m going to play football again. I hope it is here,” he said. “I just know how this business works. The team will do what is best for them. They should. Hope I’m part of it.”
Palmer tore the ACL and MCL in the same knee during the playoffs in 2006.
Palmer was injured on a sack by Rams safety Mark Barron with 11:21 left in the fourth quarter of the Cardinals’ 31-14 victory Sunday. Barron hit Palmer but didn’t bring him down. However, Palmer went to the turf a moment later and lay on the field while he was attended to by team trainers and doctor.
Palmer was 25-for-36 passing for 241 yards and an interception before the injury. He missed three games earlier this season with a damaged nerve in his throwing shoulder.
Drew Stanton replaced Palmer on Sunday, leading the first-place Cardinals (8-1) to their fifth straight victory.
“As far as our football team, everybody in our locker room including myself has all the confidence in Drew,” Arians said. “You all, too, should by now. He’s proven to everybody that he’s more than capable of finishing the job that this team has started.”
