Cardinals agree to one-year deal with TE Gresham
The Sports Xchange
The Arizona Cardinals and tight end Jermaine Gresham agreed to terms on a one-year contract Friday.
Gresham, recovering from back surgery, visited the Cardinals on Tuesday. He also reportedly had received interest from the New Orleans Saints and Oakland Raiders.
The two-time Pro Bowl tight end underwent surgery to repair a herniated disk in his back in March, ruining any chance he had at receiving a lucrative contract this year. The condition was discovered during a free-agency visit.
Gresham spent his first five years with the Cincinnati Bengals, who drafted him in the first round in 2010. He caught 280 passes for 2,722 yards and 24 touchdowns for the Bengals.
He is one of three NFL tight ends, along with San Diego’s Antonio Gates and Carolina’s Greg Olsen, to record 40 receptions, 400 yards and four touchdowns in each of the last five seasons.
Gresham caught 62 passes for 460 yards and five touchdowns last season, but he missed the Bengals’ playoff loss at the Indianapolis Colts due to the back injury, which he apparently suffered in Week 17 at the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Cardinals lost John Carlson to retirement and Rob Housler to the Cleveland Browns, leaving them with 2014 second-round pick Troy Niklas as their top returning tight end.
