Bucs mindful of Tillman’s ball-hawking
The Sports Xchange
TAMPA — The Tampa Bay Buccaneers need to be aware of the fast hands of cornerback Charles Tillman, who used to play for Lovie Smith’s Bears and is as good as any player in the league at creating turnovers and stripping the football.
“I just know he’s about as good as there is, as good as I’ve ever seen, at getting the ball out,” Smith said. “It’s a trait and something that’s acquired and all that. Whatever it is, he’s done it.”
–Wide receiver Mike Evans, echoing his comments after Sunday’s loss, said he “played terrible” against the Texans, when he was targeted for 17 passes but caught only seven for 101 yards.
“This team needs better from me, and I will get better,” Evans said. “We would have definitely won if I make one or two more plays. I’ll work hard in practice this week and hopefully I’ll make those plays come Sunday.”
–When the Bucs held Houston without a sack Sunday, it was the first time Tampa Bay did that to an opponent since December 2012.
Notes: The Bucs waived running back Mike James to make room for tackle Reid Fragel, who was promoted from the practice squad. … Cornerback Johnthan Banks, who played only 10 snaps Sunday before his toe caught in the turf, twisting his knee, said Wednesday that he was “day-to-day” recovering from the injury. … Center Evan Smith (ankle) did not practice again Wednesday. Joe Hawley, who started against the Texans, took first-team reps. … Tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins (shoulder), who missed Sunday’s game at Houston, did not practice and will be out 2-3 weeks. … Tight end Luke Stocker (hip) did not practice Wednesday. He played only a limited number of snaps last Sunday at Houston. … Left tackle Donovan Smith (knee) did not practice Wednesday. If he’s unable to play, he would likely be replaced by Kevin Pamphile. … Safety Major Wright, who missed two games with an abdominal injury, was back out and practicing Wednesday for the first time since the injury.
