Buccaneers waive P Lanning
The Sports Xchange
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers waived punter Spencer Lanning on Thursday, leaving them with two punters.
The Buccaneers had claimed Lanning off waivers June 9 from the Cleveland Browns, who had waived him after they had acquired Andy Lee from the San Francisco 49ers.
Lanning had spent the last two seasons with the Browns, averaging 44.1 yards on 177 punts, with a net average of 38.6.
Lanning had been expected to compete with veteran Michael Koenen, who is due a $3.25 million salary this year. But the Buccaneers signed Karl Schmitz on Monday after trying out four punters. Schmitz, 28, hasn’t kicked in a football game since 2008, at Jacksonville University.
