Buccaneers promote three, McCoy to IR
Three players from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers practice squad will be promoted for Week 16 to replace defensive tackle Gerald McCoy (knee), wide receiver Louis Murphy (ankle) and tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins (back), who were placed on injured reserve Tuesday.
Wide receiver Tavarres King, tight end Evan Rodriguez and defensive tackle George Uko were promoted from the practice squad.
McCoy, signed to a $100 million contract extension earlier this season, said he hoped to finish the season but team doctors recommended he undergo surgery to be healthy for the start of the 2015 season.
“I think we have a lot of great — not good — great ahead of us with this team and this organization. A big part of that will be my health. I need to be healthy if we’re going to be successful,” McCoy said.
He expects to be ready to start his usual offseason program with a personal trainer in San Diego in January after resting his knee for a few weeks.
King spent the past seven weeks on the Buccaneers’ practice squad.
Rodriguez was drafted by head coach Lovie Smith with the Chicago Bears in 2012. He played for the Bills in 2013 and joined the Buccaneers practice squad on Nov. 25.
Uko was an undrafted free agent and signed with the New Orleans Saints before being waived on Aug. 26. Uko has been on and off of the Buccaneeers’ practice squad throughout the 2014 season.
