Browns WR Pryor wants to give ‘slash-player deal’ a chance

Terrelle Pryor of the Cleveland Browns, let go by four teams as a quarterback, is looking forward to showcasing his ability as a wide receiver.

After the Cincinnati Bengals released Pryor on June 18, the 6-foot-4, 233-pound Pryor decided to switch to wide receiver in an attempt to salvage his NFL career. The Browns claimed Pryor off waivers several days later.

“I’m going to give this slash-player deal a chance,” Pryor told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “I just want to play football. I’m a playmaker, and I believe if I can touch the ball, I can go to the house, especially if I have space. This should definitely open up some opportunities.”

The Browns are the 26-year-old Pryor’s fifth team. He was traded from the Oakland Raiders to the Seattle Seahawks in April 2014, was released by the Seahawks during the preseason and was with the Kansas City Chiefs for four months earlier this year. The Chiefs released him May 5, and the Bengals signed him May 10 after he tried out for them during their rookie minicamp.

“The thing that helps me is that I played quarterback, and I know what the quarterback wants,” Pryor said last week of playing receiver. “What I’ve got to work on is the specifics, cutting in and out of the breaks. Athletically, I believe I can do anything on the field. When I get on the field, I may not be the best, but I always feel like I am. I bring that mindset. I work my hardest to be the best I can at that position.”

While playing at Ohio State, the athletically gifted Pryor caught two touchdown passes and displayed exceptional speed.

The Raiders drafted Pryor with a third-round pick in the supplemental draft in 2011. He played in 15 games (10 starts) for the Raiders over the 2011-13 seasons, including 11 games and nine starts in 2013. He has passed for 1,953 yards, nine touchdowns and 12 interceptions while rushing for 627 yards and three touchdowns.
