Browns sign PK Hartley, waive Cundiff
The Cleveland Browns signed place-kicker Garrett Hartley and waived Billy Cundiff on Saturday.
Cundiff did not practice this week due to a sore right knee and was officially listed as questionable on Friday for Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals. The 34-year-old had been struggling this season, connecting on only 22 of 29 (75.9 percent) of his field-goal attempts and had missed a field goal in each of the past five games.
Hartley, a seventh-year player, appeared in 57 games for the New Orleans Saints from 2008-13. He has converted 81.2 percent of his field-goal attempts.
Hartley is best remembered for kicking a 40-yard field goal in overtime to beat the Minnesota Vikings in the 2010 NFC Championship Game. He then connected on all three field-goal attempts in the Saints’ Super Bowl victory over the Indianapolis Colts, becoming the first kicker in NFL history to convert three field goals of 40-plus yards in the title game.
After missing the 2011 season due to an injury, he struggled with his consistency over the next two seasons and was released on Dec. 17, 2013 in favor of Shayne Graham.
