Browns Place RG3 On IR

The RG3 era in Cleveland might be over after just one game.

The resurrection of Robert Griffin, III lasted all of one real game, and it will have to be picked up during Week 10 at the earliest.

The Browns placed Griffin on short term injured reserve after he broke a bone in his shoulder in the team’s season opening loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

“I feel like I did a decent job of protecting myself recently and wanted to continue that,” Griffin said after the game, according to Cleveland.com. “But in the heat of that moment it kind of just surprised me.”

Griffin completed just 12 of 26 throws, for 190 yards with no touchdowns and an interception.

As poorly as things went in the team’s 29-10 loss, it stung twice as much when Eagles rookie Carson Wentz, starting in his first game, thoroughly outplayed the former Redskins No. 2 overall pick by completing 22 of 37 throws, for 278 yards with a pair of touchdowns.

The Browns had the chance to select Wentz, but in all their infinite wisdom they traded back with the Eagles and decided to roll with veterans Griffin and Sunday’s starter, Josh McCown.  They selected weak-armed former USC quarterback Cody Kessler in the third round, but he doesn’t really have the arm talent to be anything more than a career backup, i.e. Matt Barkley.

Things just keep getting worse for the Browns, as McCown was actually functional under center last year and probably the better choice over Griffin.  That means they aren’t good enough to compete for a playoff spot, and will likely win just enough games to keep them from drafting a DeShaun Watson type of quarterback.
