Browns OC DeFilippo: Not sure starting QB is in building

Published

on

New Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator John DeFilippo is excited about the chance to work with Johnny Manziel, but that doesn’t mean Johnny Football has the inside track to the starting quarterback job next season.

“We’re not sure if our starting quarterback’s in the building right now or not,” DeFilippo said Thursday during an introductory news conference after he was hired by the Browns.

“If he is, that’s great. If he’s not, that’s great, too. Whoever’s in that room is going to be coached hard, be held accountable and be expected to do the things that we expect out of Cleveland Browns quarterbacks.”

DeFilippo replaced Kyle Shanahan, who left after one season as the offensive coordinator. DeFilippo spent the past three seasons as the quarterbacks coach for the Oakland Raiders and tutored rookie Derek Carr last year.

While evaluating quarterback prospects in last year’s draft, DeFilippo said he became familiar with Manziel. But he has yet to assess Manziel’s limited action as a rookie in 2014 with the Browns.

“He flew out to Oakland and spent a day with him,” DeFilippo said. “Can you get an overview on a guy in a day? No. But you can get a grasp of what he thinks and how he’s feeling and those things.”

DeFilippo also plans to meet with impending free-agent quarterback Brian Hoyer, who was the Browns’ starter for much of last season. All quarterbacks will begin the offseason with a clean slate, DeFilippo said.

“At this point last year, Derek Carr wasn’t in the Oakland Raiders building,” DeFilippo said.

Browns head coach Mike Pettine and DeFilippo previously worked together with the New York Jets. DeFilippo becomes the Browns’ sixth offensive coordinator in the past six years.
