EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Cleveland Browns quarterback Josh McCown suffered a concussion Sunday while trying to score a touchdown in the first quarter of the game against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium.
Second-year quarterback Johnny Manziel, who flopped in limited duty last season and spent much of the offseason in rehab, took over.
McCown, whom the Browns signed as a free agent in March, directed an impressive drive that began at the Browns’ 9-yard line and featured four third-down conversions in as many attempts prior to his third-down scramble from the Jets’ 9-yard line.
McCown looked initially to have an open path to the end zone, but safety Calvin Pryor cut in and knocked McCown off his feet. McCown helicoptered, a la John Elway, and had the ball jarred loose as he collided mid-air by linebacker Demario Davis.
The ball bounced into the end zone, where Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie recovered it.
McCown went into the locker room, where the Browns announced he was being evaluated. Minutes later, the team announced he was diagnosed with a concussion and was out for the game.
Browns linebacker Scott Solomon suffered an ankle injury during the first series of the game.
Solomon was carted off the field. Later in the first quarter, the Browns announced he was questionable to return.
Solomon, 26, has played in 23 NFL games for four teams.
