Browns hire O’Connell, Roper to offensive staff
The Cleveland Browns hired former New England Patriots quarterback Kevin O’Connell as quarterbacks coach, according to reports Saturday.
The Browns also hired former Florida offensive coordinator Kurt Roper as a senior offensive assistant, according to FOXSports.com.
An ESPN.com source confirmed that the Browns’ revamped offensive coaching staff is now complete.
O’Connell, a third-round pick of New England in 2008, met with Cleveland on Wednesday.
O’Connell, 29, recently has been a quarterbacks tutor, and the Browns likely were interested in him because he worked with Browns rookie Johnny Manziel before the 2014 draft.
Manziel struggled in his rookie year, completing 18 of 35 passes for 175 yards and two interceptions.
O’Connell also has ties to quarterback Brian Hoyer, the Browns’ starter for much of 2014 and a pending free agent. Hoyer beat out O’Connell for the backup job to Tom Brady in 2009.
Roper was Duke’s offensive coordinator before taking the same job at Florida in 2014.
Coach Mike Pettine’s offensive staff has undergone nearly a total makeover. Coordinator Kyle Shanahan left and was replaced by former Oakland Raiders quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo.
Longtime college coach Joker Phillips was named wide receivers coach after two years in the same position at Florida and as the Gators’ recruiting coordinator. Before that, he was head coach at Kentucky for three years.
